What GCSE timetable software actually has to solve

Key Stage 4 looks tidy on paper — a shared core of English, maths and science, plus a handful of options — but the options are what break a hand-built timetable. Each pupil picks a different combination, and those combinations have to be arranged into option blocks so that no student is ever timetabled for two of their subjects at once. Get the blocks wrong and you don’t find out until September, when forty pupils have a clash you can’t unpick.
