IB Primary Years Programme

One homeroom, all week — until the specialists rotate through.

PYP timetabling is the mirror image of the Diploma: keep each class with its homeroom teacher, then thread PE, music, art and library specialists through every class fairly. Schedual keeps the rotations balanced.

What makes PYP different

Homeroom-centric, with specialists to thread through

The Primary Years Programme is the opposite problem to the Diploma. Instead of every student having a unique schedule, each class stays with its homeroom teacher for most of the week. The challenge is the specialists: PE, music, art, library and languages have to rotate through every class, fairly, without ever being in two rooms at once.

Do it by hand and one class ends up with PE three times on Monday while another never gets the library. Schedual places the homeroom blocks first, then distributes specialist rotations evenly across classes and days — with unit-of-inquiry blocks and shared year-group breaks protected.

Built for the PYP

What primary scheduling has to get right

Homeroom continuity

Each class keeps its homeroom teacher for the bulk of the week, with pastoral and inquiry time protected.

Balanced specialist rotations

PE, music, art, library and language specialists rotate through every class evenly — no class over- or under-served.

One specialist, one place

A specialist is never double-booked; shared spaces like the gym or library never overlap.

Unit-of-inquiry blocks

Reserve the longer transdisciplinary blocks the PYP inquiry cycle needs, without fragmenting the day.

Shared year-group breaks

Keep lunches and breaks aligned across a year group so playgrounds and supervision work.

Fast rebalancing

A specialist off sick? Regenerate a balanced week in seconds instead of reshuffling by hand.

By hand vs Schedual

Where primary timetables go lopsided

By hand / generic tool

  • One class gets all the good specialist slots
  • A specialist accidentally double-booked
  • Inquiry blocks chopped up to make things fit
  • Every class scheduled separately, by hand

With Schedual

  • Specialist time distributed fairly across classes
  • No specialist or shared space ever overlaps
  • Unit-of-inquiry blocks kept whole
  • The whole primary school solved in one pass

Fair and fast

Balanced rotations, without the jigsaw

Fairness across classes is exactly the kind of thing humans get wrong and solvers get right. Schedual spreads specialist contact time evenly and keeps every homeroom intact — then lets you nudge anything by hand, with live validation.

See it on your primary classes in a short demo: we’ll generate a balanced PYP week live from your real data.

FAQ

Questions IB coordinators ask

Does Schedual support IB DP, MYP and PYP?+

Yes — it is purpose-built for all three. The Diploma Programme uses individual student subject choices with HL/SL groupings; MYP and PYP use cohort-based scheduling. Each runs through the same solver with programme-appropriate constraints.

How long does generating a schedule take?+

A small DP cohort of about 30 students takes around 15–30 seconds. A full IB school with PYP, MYP and DP combined (about 500 students) typically completes in 60–90 seconds. Generation runs on a dedicated solver, so your browser never blocks.

What if a teacher becomes unavailable mid-term?+

Update their availability and re-generate — the schedule rebuilds in under a minute. Manual drag-and-drop edits are also supported, with live conflict validation before you drop a class into a new period.

Where is school data stored?+

On dedicated EU infrastructure, with daily encrypted backups and 30-day object lock for ransomware protection. Row-level security keeps every school’s data fully isolated.
